yesterday, my youthful rebellion came to an end and i participated in that wonderful process called democracy. For a while now, i had stayed away from voting; a cynical belief that my vote made little difference in an electorate of some 13 million and the lack of any decent appealing leader or party meant i couldn't be bothered making the 5 minute walk to the polling booth.
But that all ended yesterday. I had had enough of kowtowing to Americans, enough of Mr Howard and his right wing agenda and enough of lies from the government. On a different note, i also had enough of fines for not voting (voting is compulsory). And so i cast my vote; a vote for change, a vote for tolerance, a vote for independent decision making, a vote for more accessible education and a vote for truth. Sadly the conservatives won and Mr Howard was re-elected for a fourth term. My poor opinion of the common man was reinforced; the negative scare campaign run by the conservatives had succeeded. People ignorant of the world and the economy decided that yes, the government manages interest rates and has kept them down; yes, we had to go to war in Iraq because even though Saddam Hussein did not have WMD's, he had ambitions to make them and he was an evil man (which begs the question - are we now going to attack countries based on the ambitions of the leaders of those countries). A democracy, i believe, can function correctly only if the people are educated about the issues being discussed. Just take a look at the U.S where a person of low intellect is running for a second term as president and has a 50-50 chance of making it.

One good thing tha did come out of the elections yesterday was that i wont be getting any more fines.
